Hillside Golf Club is situated in Southport, the home of “Englands Golf Coast”.

It is widely regarded as the finest British golf course not to have staged an Open Championship and there are those who believe that it presents a tougher challenge than many of the courses on the current rota.

The course played today has evolved dramatically in the last 60 years, with Fred Hawtree re-routing the original 18 hole layout and creating the fabled back nine, set amongst some of the highest and wildest dunes found on any links. More recently Martin Ebert has set about modernising and refreshing the course, concentrating on the front nine. The results are spectacular.

Since the ’60s, Hillside has hosted several major amateur events, including The Amateur Championship and the Ladies’ British Amateur, the course hosted The Amateur Championship in 1979 and 2011. It has also staged the 1982 PGA Championship, won by Tony Jacklin, and the 2003 English Seniors’ Open, won by Carl Mason. In 2014, Hillside was chosen as one of the courses to host the final qualifying rounds of the Open Championship for a run of 4 years.

Hillside is a regular host to the DP World Tour (European Tour) and R&A and receives visiting golfers from all over the world. One of the friendliest places to visit, the members are extremely proud of their inclusive and welcoming Club.

Most recently it held the British Master 2019, with local lad Tommy Fleetwood hosting the event and playing to sell-out crowds. it showed the quality of the course to the world.

Course

Hillside is widely regarded as the finest British golf course not to have staged an Open Championship and there are those who believe that it presents a tougher challenge than many of the courses on the current rota. From the white tees the course at Hillside measures just over 7,000 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. From the blue tees the course is a more manageable 6,558 yards.

Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. None other than two-time Open champion, Greg Norman, once opined that Hillsides back nine was “the best in Britain” and, in similar vein, compatriot Rodney Pampling described it as “the toughest course I have ever played” after competing over the Open qualifying course in 1998.

Hillside lies a stones throw from Royal Birkdale, amid a stretch of sandhills on the outskirts of Southport, and has many of the attributes of its neighbour. The start, like Formby, is dominated by the railway line that runs parallel to the opening holes. The back nine was re-designed in the 1960s and features a series of holes that linger in the mind long after a visit is over.
